Why Start a Blog in 2026?

Blogging remains a powerful platform for sharing your expertise, building an audience, and potentially earning income. In 2026, blogs continue to be valuable because:

They provide complete control over your content and brand.   With a blog you own your content (when built on a good platform) and are not limited to single use of paid templates or opportunities that many paid platforms offer like GoDaddy (site builder templates), Wix, and Shopify.   Scaling your business as you grow is key to building exceptional wealth with no limits.   A blog allows you to adjust, customize and scale no matter what your brand needs in the future without limitations. You own your platform and audience.

Search engines still prioritize high-quality written content by people with genuine, real world experience.  Yes you can write content with the assistance of AI to speed the process, however, true wealth and business branding come from genuine people writing genuine content.   Starting a blog let’s google and other search engines know you (and your brand) are real and what your expertise is over time.  A reputation that lasts a lifetime that can reward you with abundance for many years to come.  Blogs establish you as an authority in your field.

Blogs can be monetized through multiple revenue streams including but not limited to Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Search Engine Ads, YouTube, Affiliate Marketing and much more!  The sky is the limit!

Choosing Your Blog’s Niche

Before diving into the technical setup, you need to choose your blog’s focus. Here’s how to select the perfect niche:

Step 1: Identify Your Interests

Start by listing topics you’re passionate about and could write about consistently. Consider:

  • Your professional expertise.
  • Personal hobbies and interests.
  • Problems you’ve solved in your life (this is a huge superpower and most commonly used to genuinely help humanity and create wealth very quickly).
  • Topics you enjoy learning about, you can share what you learn in a podcast on your blog.

Step 2: Validate Market Demand

Ensure there’s an audience interested in your chosen niche:

  • Use Google Trends to check topic popularity.
  • Research related keywords using tools like Ubersuggest or Google Keyword Planner.
  • Look for active communities on Reddit, Facebook, and Quora.
  • Check if there are successful blogs in the space.   Competition shows there is a demand for information, however, you don’t want to get into a highly competitive space right out of the gate.

Step 3: Consider Monetization Potential

Evaluate how you could potentially earn from your blog:

  • Affiliate marketing opportunities.
  • Digital product potential like selling online courses, lessons, software, ebooks, etc.
  • Coaching or consulting possibilities.
  • Advertising revenue potential such as Google Adsense or MediaVine.

Selecting the Right Blogging Platform

WordPress powers over 43% of all websites and remains the best choice for most bloggers in 2025. I have always build my websites on WordPress since 2008 and still do till this day.   In my long 25 years of experience making money online via website, WordPress (self hosted) the BEST way to start a blog hands down.  Here’s why:

WordPress.org (Self-Hosted) Benefits:

  • Complete control over your site:  You want to control to scale.  When you are first starting out, you are learning and don’t know the potential barriers that can happen building a website when more traffic demands come into play.   You don’t want to need a space
  • Unlimited monetization options:  Other blogging platforms only allow monetization option they choose and often require you to pay “extra” if you want to monetize a different way.  I you disagree with their limited opportunities, then your only option will be to completely build a new website somewhere else.  You will never had that problem with WordPress self-hosted.
  • Full customization potential – Thousands of themes and plugins:  Design potential is limitless and you can upgrade your website to a fresh look as years pass very easily.  Plugins give your WordPress blog the flexibility to get it to function however you like to match you needs, making automation and work task much easier!
  • Better SEO capabilities:  WordPress is built for SEO and ranking with content, end of discussion.  It’s badass.

Other Platform Options:

  • WordPress.com (not the same as WordPress Self Hosted): Good for hobby bloggers that have no plans to create massive wealth or scale.
  • Medium: Perfect for pure writers.
  • Wix: Suitable for visual-heavy blogs, will always be locked into limited templates and monetization limitations due to what that platform can offer.
  • Substack: Ideal for newsletter-focused content
  • Blogger: Googles version of blog, again, you cannot scale and will be limited, great for hobby blogs.

Setting Up Your Blog

Follow these steps to launch your blog:

1. Choose a Domain Name

Your domain name should be:

  • Memorable and easy to spell.
  • Related to your niche, preferably with keywords related to your niche.
  • Available on social media platforms.
  • Professional and brandable.
  • Preferably a .com extension.

2. Select a Hosting Provider

For new bloggers, we recommend these hosting providers:

  • Bluehost: Best for beginners
  • SiteGround: Excellent support and speed
  • BigScoots: Excellent for personal support, flexibility, security and speed.  Our #1 recommendation (yes we sue them to host this site you are on now).
  • HostGator: Budget-friendly option, google starting point.

3. Install WordPress

Most hosts offer one-click WordPress installation. A good hosting provider will do this for you if you get a little confused.  It’s very easy to set up and get started.  The process typically involves:

  1. Accessing your hosting control panel.
  2. Finding the WordPress installer.
  3. Setting up admin credentials.
  4. Completing the installation.

Essential Design and Customization

Make your blog visually appealing and user-friendly:

Choose a Theme

Select a theme that:

  • Loads quickly:  This is important for ranking factors as well.  If you chose a “cheap” hosting option then choosing a very fast loading theme is more important for you.
  • Is mobile-responsive (most of them are these days):  If you don’t know what mobile responsive means, it’s that the website will rearrange itself automatically to look good on mobile devices like phones and tablets.
  • Supports your content type: some themes are geared towards promoting video courses, downloads, news articles, podcasts, etc.  Choose a theme that fit’s your blogging style.
  • Supports design flexibility: Most themes are flexibile enough to change images, colors, etc., however with AI, designing your own custom page has become a breeze.  You will want a them that allows you to change buckets, sliders, images, headers, footers, etc.  The more flexibility the better.
  • Has good documentation: this is important as you will have to learn how to edit images, text, etc in your theme builder or template.
  • Receives regular updates:  This is a must to keep your website security tight.  You don’t want to get hacked.  Malware is a real issue and security to protect your website from going down and your customers data is paramount.

Recommended Themes with most of the features above are Kadence, Twenty Twenty Two, and Divi.

Essential Plugins

Install these must-have plugins:

  1. Yoast SEO or AISEO for search optimization.
  2. WP Rocket for speed optimization.
  3. Wordfence for security.
  4. Monster Insights or Analytify for analytics that are easy to understand right in your WP dashboard.  You will need this to understand how your visitors are finding you and what are your most popular content so you can do more of what works and less of what doesn’t.
  5. BackupBuddy for backups (you only need this if your host doesn’t back up your site for you daily)

Must-Have Pages and Initial Setup

Create these essential pages:

About Page

Include:

  • Your story and background, add any experience, expertise, and credentials you have that lend trust and weight to what your are blogging about.
  • Blog’s purpose and mission.  People love to be inspired and will follow causes they believe in, let people know what you stand for.
  • Personal photo.  Put up a genuine and fun photo of you.
  • Contact information, usually a link to your contact page on your website.  Don’t put your personal email in the text or spamming bots will scrape it from the text and add you to a spamming list, always use a contact form with a recaptcha.

Contact Page

Set up:

  • Contact form with recaptch, google has these keys for free and most forms integrate with them for free.
  • Email address with your domain name.
  • Social media links.
  • Response time expectations.

Legal Pages

Create:

  • Privacy Policy
  • Terms of Service
  • Disclaimer
  • Cookie Notice
  • Necessary Disclosures tailored to your type of marketing like an Affiliate Disclosure for example if you engaged in affiliate marketing.

Creating Your First Blog Post

Follow these steps for your inaugural post:

Planning

  1. Choose a topic relevant to your niche.  More than one topic can be separated into categories.  A list of 3-5 categories is always a good start.
  2. Research keywords and competition.  Long tail keywords are a great place to start by focusing on answering people’s questions surrounding your niche.  These keywords will be used in your categories, content titles, text, etc.
  3. Outline your main points like where you want to start educating your audience so they get to know you.
  4. Gather supporting information like what other information they may need to know before trusting you to use your service or recommendations.

Content Writing

  • Create a compelling headline including your niche keywords of choice.
  • Write an engaging introduction.  The first paragraph should clearly state what the article is about and answer main questions in the blog posts.
  • Use subheadings for structure.  Using correct H2, H3, and H4 heading in content helps people skip ahead to content they want to read the most.
  • Include relevant images.  Images should visual support the article content.
  • End with a call-to-action.  If you are selling anything, go ahead and ask for the sale or to optin to a newsletter for ongoing information.

Optimization

  • Optimize for SEO.  All headings and content should always contain your targeted audience keywords.
  • Add internal and external links in every blog post.  A healthy mix is great, if you just drive traffic to link for advertisements it won’t rank well and feel spamming to visitors.
  • Include meta description, this helps search engines understand what the article is about.  This can be configured to use the first paragraph of your blog post via your SEO plugin like Yoast or AISEO.
  • Optimize images.  Use relevant keywords and description in all of your images both before upload and afterwards in alt descriptions.
  • Format for readability, don’t keywords stuff!  Use your natural descriptive language any human could understand.

Next Steps and Growth Strategies

After launching your blog:

Immediate Actions

  1. Set up Google Analytics.  It’s free and the best visitor tracking tool out there.  It’s a bit complicated to learn because its vast and can do a LOT of amazing things.  If you are a beginner, using a plugin like Monster Insights or Analytify will help you make sense of Google Analytics.
  2. Submit your sitemap to Google.  A google SEO plugin like Yoast or AISEO will do this for you.
  3. Create social media accounts, make sure they match your website brand and connect these to your website.
  4. Start building an email list.  You will need a way for people to subscribe to a newsletter or accept your lead magnet (like a free report for example). Typical ways new bloggers do this is with a 3rd party provider like Aweber, GetResponse, ConstantContact, Brevo, etc.  You can also self host your own email newsletter (which is by far cheaper) by using a plugin like FluentCRM.
  5. Plan your content calendar.  Posting content regularly is a must, especially in the beginning.  Having a calendar or flow chart to remind you of what you plan to write about, when, and also log new writing ideas for the future is essential to staying focused and on track.

Growth Tactics

  • Publish consistently.
  • Promote on social media.  Your published blog posts can be automatically posted to your social media accounts by using a plugin like Blog2Social which saves a lot of time.
  • Network with other bloggers.  New AI tools and plugins to make the tech side of operating a new blog easier are evolving rapidly.  Blogging groups share what works, what’s new, etc.
  • Focus on SEO, everything you do should revolve around this so it’s clear who you are targeting, what your website its about, and who you can help.
  • Build your email list.  Offer a lead magnet that is genuinely helpful to your audience in exchange for their email.   AND NEVER spam them, treat this list with genuine respect and they will happily share their abundance with you.

Final Tips for Success

  1. Focus on quality over quantity.   Quantity never moves faster than quality, ever.
  2. Be patient and consistent.  Rome wasn’t built in a day, you won’t get famous overnight. Let the love of what you do keep you going and the payoff will arrive soon enough.
  3. Engage with your readers, ask questions and learn about what they need.  Let this help you decide what to write about and guide you best.
  4. Keep learning and improving.
  5. Track your metrics.   Again, a good theme paired with the right plugin to consistently learn what Google Analytics has to show you will help you move in the direction that works best as well as allow A/B split testing when you are ready.

Remember, successful blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on creating valuable content for your readers, and the growth will follow naturally.
